INTRODUCTION

The name “Magadan” was to Soviet citizens like “Auschwitz” was to Jews during and after World War II.  Located in eastern Siberia, Magadan was the site of the “gulag” system in which political as well as other prisoners suffered greatly in slave labor camps, with millions dying over the decades from harsh treatment, starvation, and the severe physical environment.  Even after almost twenty years subsequent to the disintegration of the Soviet Union it is impossible to know now how many human bodies are buried under Soviet labor projects.  As prisoners died on works sites of the slave labor camps they were buried where they fell, falling from exhaustion, frostbite, or execution.  Largely, those who live in Magadan today are descendants from the survivors of the gulag system.

After the breakup of the Soviet Union, two Catholic priests went to Magadan to establish a Catholic presence.  They initially presided at Mass in a rented apartment but finally, in 2001, were able to celebrate the first Mass in the newly constructed Church of the Nativity.  While living conditions in Magadan and its surrounding areas have always been difficult, the economic realities of the Soviet breakup have hit the people of Magadan and eastern Siberia extremely hard.  For this and other reasons, many expectant parents opt for abortions due to the economic realities of their lives.  In fact, while statistics are hard to come by in Russia, we believe there are currently more abortions there than live births.

We believe that all human life is sacred.  Therefore, the Church of the Nativity has founded Nativity Inn.

NATIVITY INN

Residence

The Church of the Nativity has established Nativity Inn, a sanctuary for expectant mothers who do not have the financial resources to continue a pregnancy without the Church’s help.  Women who are pregnant can come to Nativity Inn at any time during her pregnancy.  Often, the women who seek the Nativity Inn’s help would otherwise elect to have an abortion because they are without the financial ability to care for a baby.  They come broken-hearted, scared, and desperate, often with feelings of abandonment.  They may not be able to see the gift they have and instead see nothing but hopelessness and despair.  They do not know how they will be able to raise the child.  Nativity Inn offers a real alternative to abortion.  If not for Nativity Inn, there is a very real possibility that their babies would never be born.

In exchange, Nativity Inn asks very little of the women.  They are asked to continue their education, to keep their doctor appointments, to remain sober and drug-free, and if their health permits, to contribute to the housekeeping duties at Nativity Inn.  If they need job skills, Nativity Inn guides them to the people who can help.  When they are ready, they will be assisted in finding independent housing.  Nativity Inn continues to assist the mothers and their babies for up to three years after birth to provide the stability and support for a successful outcome.

Out Of Residence Care

Some expectant mothers have housing and families but cannot face another pregnancy and child to raise because of their desperate financial situation.  For these mothers, Nativity Inn provides maternity clothes, baby bottles, baby clothes, soap, towels, and other necessary supplies so that the babies do not die from abortions.

CAN YOU HELP?

No child should die due to lack of money.  Yet, tragically, this is what is happening in Russia today.  We can use your help to change this reality.  The mothers and babies who are helped by Nativity Inn depend on your support.

Christ has no body now but yours; No hands, no feet on earth, but yours. Yours are the eyes through which he looks with compassion on this world; Yours are the feet with which he walks to do good; Yours are the hands with which he blesses all the world. Yours are the hands; Yours are the feet, Yours are the eyes, You are His Body. Christ has no body now but yours. St Teresa of Avila.

Nativity Inn can never have too many friends.  The mothers, their babies, and their children need your help.  To join, please contact Connie Hood at 314-863-0500. Also please see Nativity Inn's own Web Site. (A dedicated site has been established so that people searching for Pro-Life sites can find us.)
